July 18 1995
Departure for vacations in Brazil of the referee of Viana do Castelo, Carlos Calheiros and his famíily. The trip was paid for by FCPorto.
To better know who Carlos Calheiros is and the reason why he went to Brasil with his family in a hollyday trip paid by FCPorto, we can let a collegue referee of him from the same town to tell us the story. The letter was received in a blog that published it.

"Hello friend,

Beginning to present me as a referee of the Football Association of Viana do Castelo and sympathizer of Benfica. I do not want that what have happened recently pass undisclosed, like many other situations have passed. As the name of the city should already tell you, in terms of football and refereeing, this is the city of the famous José Carlos Amorim Calheiros (better known in TAP by José Amorim) a referee during the 90s.

But to tell you what happened, what you don´t know is that Calheiros is currently the Vice-Chairman of the Football Association of Viana do Castelo since 1997 (the year in which he left arbitration), an institution of public utility and according to him, with the functions of serving as a "bridge" between the arbitration board of that association and its president. Yes, I know what you're thinking: if the (referee) Martins dos Santos without this kind of job did what he did (once corrupt, always corrupt), now you  can imagine what our friend José Amorim (Calheiros) can do in his functions.

Recently the chairman of the arbitration board of the association, its name is José Costa Valente (with a surname that is also very inspiring), uncle of Pedro Valente, refereee of the FPF that was charged with 2 counts of corruption in the process "Golden Whistle", he convened a plenary meeting of some sort with his referees of which I belong, to among other things, clean up its image of recent situations (cronyism, suspicious of changing the ratings of referees and other opaque situations) and he brings with him his nr. 1 ally, which in practice is the person that keeps him in office, and who is he? Carlos CALHEIROS!

The later spoke for about 2,5 hours and the first for 2 hours (!). Among many things, among many banalities, José Amorim (Calheiros) had the nerve to speak of his prodigious career (provoked many smiles on everyone present), but this time he has outdone itself. And why? Because, in a tone of indifference and almost joy, confessed to his club sympathies, its tendency to FC PORTO, complaining about the games in which he said the club failed to win. Given this, there was a referee from the front rows who said something, say in a tone half serious half joking , that provoked the following exchange between them:

Heckler: Well you could have invented a penalty!
Calheiros: - I invented, yes, I invented (penalties) but the ball sometimes didn´t go in!

Well, one word to the wise is sufficient to say and we recall that many times the ball did go in (3-3 in Antas Stadium, for example). Is in 1995 the public prosecutor closed the case of 'travels' because allegedly they failed to find proves that the payments by Porto for the illicit favors, the truth arrived late but arrived, it was said publicly by Calheiros admitting that benefited the Porto deliberately to have at the end of the season this generous prize (a trip for you and your family in the amount of 760 contos (3800€)).

To be clear, these words were uttered August 12, 2013, between 20.30 and 23h by José Carlos Amorim Calheiros in the auditorium of the Sports Group Cultural Workers and the Shipyards of Viana do Castelo to an audience of approximately 30 referees, arriving at the meeting in his majestic JAGUAR, even though Ihe is just public employee (working in the public hospital in Viana do Castelo).

So we have his confirmation of what we already knew, and I'm ashamed to have him as a superior and fellow citizen, I would like this were made public as much as possible to unmask a scoundrel like this. Spread this fact, write about it using your words based on the facts here exposed that are strictly true (can be attested by several people) not just in the blogosphere but also on the social networks and official organs of Benfica, Benfica TV because this can not go unscathed.

Regards”

And now, for something completely different. Or not!
About DOPING!!

Jogou no Sporting, Benfica (1989-91), Boavista (91-93), Estrela (93-94), Boavista (94-95), Belenenses (95-96), Porto (96-99).

Andei a época toda a saber”.

Melhora a parte respiratória.

E termina,

O DOPING É APENAS UM DESSES TENTÀCULOS DO MAL QUE POLUi A VERDADEIRA ESSÊNCIA DO JOGO.

And the same text now in english for our foreign readers:
 "Dirty Play", by Fernando Mendes
Fernando Mendes, born on November 6, 1966, was the only football player who has so far had the courage to denounce the use of doping and the "structure" behind that allowed that, in his book "Dirty Play". He was also the only player who played in all the clubs that were portuguese champions.
Played at Sporting, Benfica (1989-91), Boavista (91-93), Estrela (93-94), Boavista (94-95), Belenenses (95-96), Porto (96-99).
My Story with Doping
Unfortunately doping is a natural consequence of competition. Achieving great results, to win, to win and win again, more and more. This causes many clubs decid to shorten the way through the paths of lawlessness.
"Take it or Leave it". If a player does not want to lose his place in the team to another player he accepts. If you don´t play your sport value decreases enormously and that is very serious in a career that is so short. With this in mind it will very little time of hesitation.
In my time doping was taken in two ways, injection or tablet. It could be before the game, during halftime or underway the match. The injection had immediate effect and the tablet had to be taken an hour before the game.
There were different methods and each player took a personalized dose according to his weight, physical condition or the last time he had ingested the substance. There was a need to manage the cycles of each athlete to reduce the risk of heart attack caused by excessive drug. However, matches against direct opponents, the Portugal Cup or European games was always sure. When we knew there it would not be any anti-doping control, it never failed.
An injection took five minutes to take effect. With that in the body, we ran faster, we jumped higher and we seemed never tired. But like any drug that is used for improvement of certain function, some players reached a certain point where they could no longer play without being doped.
The influence of doping in athletic performance was so powerful that I found myself getting almost unbelievable "performances". I remember a game in an European competition (with Boavista) against a team that had 3 world champions in its squad. One was a powerful striker in the air (Jorgen Klinsmann). Always played left-back but I caught him several times on my area of action. He was a beast with a tremendous power of thrust. But that day I jumped like crazy and won almost all the headers. There seemed I had  SPRINGS ON THE LEGS. Today, this old athlete must still be wondering how it was possible to lose so many high balls to a dwarf. The secret was a smal , middle -sized nail called "Pervitin". They sticked us in the arm and I could run and jump for 4 straight games. It was me that was changed. But still I´m glad I won because that moment was historic.
(n.r. A question I asked myself many times, why some players have the arms all full of tattoos? Is it to hide the "sticks"? Raul Meireles and Lucho from Oporto are 2 players that I can recall suddenly).
Doping has two faces. On the one hand gives strength to endure, gives more help to win. It caused a HUGE RAGE that accompanied the lectures given to us before the tsrat of the game and we run wildly. At the end of a game in which we were doped we took an "anti-rabies" in order to lower the dose that we took. But still with the “anti-rabies” we still could run until midnight. Or we could face the opposite, depression, lack of patience, isolation.
The saddest part of all this is the ease with which a footballer learns to live in this miserable situation. When the masseuse gave us the drug he always told us that it was illegal but never warned us of the possible dangers.
The "ORGANIZATION" IN THE NORTH OF PORTUGAL
Players were pawns in this huge scheme called sports doping. According to many the dosages were made in laboratories in the north of Portugal (in Oporto). It was also said that these labs even had legal façades, but devoted a part of the premises and of its human research to the investigation of new dosages that could pass unharmed in doping controls. The people in those laboratories worked directly with people of the clinical staff of the clubs. The stimulants always ended up in the dressing room to be tested.
THE JUNIORS AS GUINEA PIGS
The system of doping in a club where I played was sofisticated in such a way that they extended the networks of their wickedness beyond the senior squad. In certain trianings appeared one or two juniors to train with us, but they were not there because they were good, they were there to serve as guinea pigs for the new dosages. A member of the clinical staff gave capsules or injections of illegal compositions to the kids. These experiments could not be done with senior players who play every Sunday and who are the main assets of the club. If anything went badly it would be expensive for the club. Also in senior football there are doping controls, while in junior the checks happen only once in a lifetime so it was the perfect place to make the experiments.
The juniors urinated into a cup and that urine would serve to make the internal antidoping tests. When the results came out someone phoned the laboratories of near by to give the news, "Look, this has accused too much, so we have to lower the dose". Or, "This doesn´t accuse much, so we can raise a little".
When the dosage was right, they initiated mass production for the senior team. The junior did not have any idea of what was given to them, they said it was just vitamins and that urine was for internal control and analysis. The juniors were used to improve the performance of the first team.
Over the years I've been in professional football I realized that the cruelest way to win was tha almost anything goes. "The ends justifies the means".
The effect of certain stimulants is that they instill one HUGE RAGE which can be a big help when we run and expend a lot of energy during the game. Clubs who use stimulants only bother to evade doping controls. But the risks are avoided by several tricks. Sometimes medical departments who use stimulants forbidden control their players to realize if the drug that was injected in another game has left the body.
Always heard that in certain clubs gave urine of a third part to doped athletes so they do not accuse any illicit substance in games where there was doping control. Also felt strange to see masseurs keeping catheters (hollow tubes that are inserted through the urethra into the bladder) inside you’re their bags. Another of those tricks were cold balls used by the doctors, much in vogue in the first half of my career, through which they could choose which players could go to the control. The cunning schemes may change with the passage of years, but they have never ceased to exist. I would not be surprised if similar situations became public.
(Actually it became, Casagrande, Deco, Carlos Alberto, Semedo, Emerson, all former players of Porto).
Doping has brought great benefits to almost everyone involved. Of course the good form of a player is not due solely to the use of stimulants, there is no drug that can teache to play football.
THE PROGRAM OF SIC , May 30, 1997.
The "Donos da Bola", a SIC program displays a report using a hidden camera and a journalist passing for an officer of a second rate club interested in buying some drugs so that their players can run longer. They have two games remaining and need to win these games to ensure maintenance. The journalist contacts a doctor in OPorto (Matosinhos) which is reputed to facilitate this type of situation for the clubs concerned.
(n.r. The infamous dr. Póboas that was awarded a place in the Board of Directors of FCP SAD. For good services?).
That doctor receives the alleged officer in his private clinic in Matosinhos and is filmed in the act selling him a box of 40 tablets of "Centramina" for 40 contos (€200). During the conversation, the doctor, unknowingly being filmed, gives a lesson about doping products. Asked by the journalist begins to speak in Pervitin. I used it several times, it was very strong.
Beyond the technical teachings the doctor recalls his experience at a club where he had worked in the previous two years and reveals contacts that lets him know when there were anti-doping controls. "As always I knew the checks and that was cool. I knew it during the whole season".
The doctor stresses the importance of having a few people with access to the locker room. (N.R: O Porto has always been known to have a very tight control on such things. Such an "organization" serves many purposes).
"Usually the things must pass by the masseur. The players must be alone in the locker room with the therapist. Should not be there any coaches or directors", he continues.
"In such a situation (emergency results) sould be fitting to have a large part of the squad taking the product", he concludes.
To convince athletes clinical advised that lie, "can get the product within a capsule and say it is caffeine. Caffeine is admitted without problems".
The doctor also speaks of caffeine that is sold in Spain and is called "Durvitan" but says that this product is not for this situation for it has "a delayed effect that takes eight hours". The "Centramina" is the drug is indicated, "the pills are taken an hour and a quarter before the game. You can give them with coffee or water. For those two games the should take two at once", (So, all is well )
This increase in quantity it is a sports motto that I had to live with, the higher the challenge the greater the dose.
"Today I do not use much caffeine. When there is control I use something that cyclists gave me. It is “Ozotine”, an immunomodulator. Improves the respiratory part. It is vials with various components and we put in caffeine, one makes a syringe with 10-15cc and then each player takes 1,5cc”.
In the end the doctor leaves a final advice, "It is very important that the athletes feel that everything is controlled, that there is no danger of being caught in the doping control".
And a final shot, "Basically it is not only this but the referees also counts, because this is not enough for scoring goals, referees are also important".
(Of course, the referees, always the referees)
Another Club
In other club, they had greater care in administering illegal substances for fear of any doping controls. This more cautious approach resulted in a greater ability to access confidential information, as I learned during the time. The doctor also boasted of having someone that informed him in advance of the games in which would be doping control. Thus, if a game was on Sunday the doctor knew on Friday or Saturday the matches that which would be subject of doping control. If there was no control we had stimulants. When there was control, there was not.
His contact must have been very good because of the few times I went to the control it never found anything! Neither none of my colleagues.
During the times I played I often heard talking about many players that took urine of other people to the control so as not to be caught. They urinated and in the end they changed bottles. It was said that it was customary in some clubs. In this club the players had free way to take substances proposed by the doctor.
The products helped me make one of the best seasons of my career. (n.r. Fernando Mendes played for Belenenses when he was 28 years old and went to Port at 29 years). At that time I was no longer very young and knew this was a great opportunity to improve my sporting situation. Beyond the dope at that time we had a great coach and colleagues with great quality.
In some clubs I took “Pervitin”, “Centramina”, “Ozotine”, caffeine among many other things I never knew the name. I also had a doctor who told us when there would be controls.
And he ends,
Yes, dear readers, there is doping in Portuguese football. Has been for many years. In many clubs. There comes in different forms, is tested in several ways and is only consumed by athletes. Strength, hangover, joy, anguish. It's good but it sucks. But it was better if there were not. How it was much better if there were not bought referees, corrupt officials, violent players and alienated supporters.
Nothing is proven, no one is arrested, the impunity is TOTAL. There is no fair or well-intentioned man who resists the networks of power and megalomaniac criminalit established in Portuguese football through its various ramifications. The DOPING IS JUST ONE OF THOSE EVIL tentacles polluting the TRUE ESSENCE OF THE GAME.
A player who uses stimulants for a whole season will be a time of great physical break . The doping emerges as a way to trick the body fatigue . Has an immediate effect but later the athlete will resent the muscular violence. Several times I watched teams that are too hard on lap 1st but the 2nd go wake .
A Final Note
This book is a second version of the work initially written. The first version pointed names, locations and dates of the most sordid moments that are reported here. Unfortunately, the climate of fear and censorship installed in the Portuguese football has made it legally impossible that these same people were exposed, leaving this first book condemned to live in a drawer.
The pages you just read, and of which I am proud of, are frontal, true, but had to be generalized because of a perverse SYSTEM where everyone is afraid and ashamed of to give the face and pointing the finger at those responsible for illegal situations that violate the ethics of sport. I hope, however, that after these pages some people who have lived similar situations may come forward to tell their story. Those who do that will provide a priceless service to Portuguese football. It may be that at that time, the first book in the drawer will see the light of day. And believe me, there is much more to tell.
